Mercedes ML320 CDIMy check engine light is on. Oil and fuel filter have been changed recently. What's wrong?

My check engine light always comes on a month or so after I have the oil changed. Usually my husband puts in a fuel cleaner and the light goes out after a couple of starts. Why does this happen. Last year when I took it to a mechanic he changed the oxygen sensor for $500!
