If you change the oil regularly, probably not.

Could be that you have faulty Camshaft Position Sensors. What year and model is your Nissan?

i change the 2 camshafts and the cranckshaft and I still got the light on why can I do?

If the engine oil level and condition is normal, then you probably have to replaced the Intake Valve Timing Control Solenoid Valve to fix the problem.

The valve for the Bank 2 is right next to the oil cap in front of the engine.

Where is this sensor located. I have a 350z hr duel intake motor and I van not find that sensor

For your 350Z, the solenoid valve is part of the front top cover. Try changing the engine oil first.

I have a nissan maxima 2002. When I remove the code the car works fine for a few days, then the check engine comes back and the performance is reduced... Any idea of what I should look for? Maybe some frequent problems with this model?

The problem it's usually the intake valve, but you could start by inspecting the engine oil. Dirty or low engine oil could also cause the valve to fail.

07 Nissan quest 3.5 p0011 p0021 keeps returning, van needed guides due to chain wear replaced guides,chains, water pump, and phasers all at customers request.
timing is correct on all three chains still have first trip dtcs.

Are there any other symptoms? Some techs are getting the same code after replacing the chain. If the chain was properly installed, you could try replacing the sensors or the valve itself.

Although the sensor is one of the possible causes, usually the problem is the solenoid valve.

02 Maxima died on me while driving. Won't start back up. Got P0021 code. I've changed both cam shaft sensors, craftshaft sensor and IVT solenoid. After changing IVT solenoid car started after getting a jump but died again. Jumped it again and car started after a few tries, but died again while driving. Car sounds like its going start, but just won't. Any suggestions?

Usually replacing the sensor fix the problem. Damage new sensors, poor sensor connection (connector not all the way in), broken wires can also cause the same code and problem. Also, check the fuel pressure.

How do I go about checking the fuel pressure?

The proper way is by installing a fuel pressure gauge at the fuel damper, but if you don't a fuel pressure gauge, you could just disconnect the fuel damper (where the fuel hose connect to the fuel injector) and crank the engine, if fuels comes out, then more than likely the fuel pressure is OK.

One more thing, when you crank the engine, does the "Security" light stays ON solid or it turns OFF?

Oil levels are fine and oil is of light color, code also came up with Bank 2 when looked into further.

Did you tried to reset the code? Did the code comeback? If the oil level and condition is OK and the light comes back, then you have to replace the Intake Valve Timing Control Solenoid Valve.

Hi, I have a mechanic replaced all my camshaft position sensors, The old code disappeared after the replacement a new code(P0021)appeared upon picking up the suv. I drive a 2003 Infiniti fx35, they charge me 440 dollars for all the sensor and it was overcharge but I still paid it for the peace of mind.. , After returning the car to be diagnose again(89.99) they recommend to replace the vvt solenoid for 860 dollars. It was too much for me so I decided to buy the parts and installed it myself for 80 dollars. The code is still there, P0021. The car seems to work fine and drive well but I am scared of the engine code.. What can i do to fix this and is it safe to drive my suv to work?

When was the last time you change engine oil and filter? what oil weight are you using? how many miles on your FX?

The mileage on my fx35 is 104000. I just had the oils change full synthetic and has a flush a week ago. Not sure about the weight, I went to an oil change shop for it(Carspa)

Make sure the oil is not heavier than 5W-30, otherwise the solenoid valve won't work properly. If the oil weight is OK and you already replace the sensor and solenoid valve, and you still have the problem, then you have to check the wires from the sensor and solenoid valve to the ECM.

- INT/V SOL B1 and B2
On INT/V SOL, I got expected value on both(40% @ 2000 RPM) but INT/V TIM didn't gave me expected value also on both (stayed at 0 @ 2000 RPM)

Sounds like solenoid valves are stuck in the advance position. How is the engine oil level and condition? when was the last time you change the oil? what oil weight are you using?

my oil change is due in 800 km

Most of the times the solenoid valves fail due to lack of oil changes, so if the oil gets very dirty and/or too low, both solenoid valves will fail at the same time. Is not rare, we see that at our shop all the time.

I suggest changing the engine oil before the valves. sometimes changing the engine oil will fix the problem.

My 05 altima died while driving and the codes kicked out are p0021 and p0030...camshaft position timing-ocer advanced bank 2 will changing the oil help and make it start or do I need to change the sensors?

If you haven't change the oil lately , you should start with that and clear the codes. If the codes come back, then you need to replace the intake solenoid valves.

The reason it stopped was because it was out of gas. Guess the floater didn't work changed out the fuel pump filled it with gas and it started right up. Do you think I still need to change the valves

Hey there, i have a 2005 nissan murano 3.5 v6 thats giving me some trouble.

Firstly im having starting issues, from cold, sometimes the turn over is abit longer than normal, then when the engine is upto temp it wont start at all, almost like its out of fuel. once ive given it 5 mins it will start again. Also occasionally when it does drive, ill experience a brief loss of power, my foot will be on the accelorator but the revs will drop for a sec and pop back up (it only doesnt this once or twice a journey)

im getting the codes p0021 and p0340, ive replaced both cam sensors and have a electrician check the wiring on both and there fine, any ideas as am stumped!

Sounds like Intake Valve Timing Control Solenoid Valve may not be working properly. The valve could set both codes and cause the symptoms you describe.

Old or dirty oil could cause the valve to stick. I suggest starting by changing the engine oil and filter. If the problem persist, you may have to replace the valve.

I have a 2004 maxima with 162k im getting codes p0340 p011 and p0021 I've changed the cam shaft sensors and both the variable valve timing solenoids and still keep getting codes come back n lack/loss of power transmission stays stuck in 5th gear (automatic trans) i turn of the motor n turn it back on in 10 seconds n runs ok again for maybe 10 to 12 minutes i know my timing chain guides need to b replaced but I've read threads here saying they changed the chain n guides n still have the same problems so wat else can it be???

If you have already replaced the sensors and valves, and you think that the chain is not the cause of the problem, then the problem is either the crankshaft position senor or the camshaft sprockets.

In my humble opinion, I would start by checking the timing chain.

Change the engine oil to start, and sometimes it may take 2-3 oil changes to fix the problem. But if the problem persist, you have to replace the Intake Valve Timing Control Solenoid Valve.

I have just taken my 04 nissan maxima 203,000 km to Nissan dealership as it started running rough at idle low power after a trip away, they said it is a P0021 code bank 2 variable timing and they tried freeing it up with laptop but said no luck.... and have given an estimate of $4000 nz to replace variable timing unit/sprocket ( which is $895 by itself) and they think I may aswell do the timing chains at the same time seem having to pull apart.Is this legit? or should I start by replacing variable timing solenoids first then maybe cam shaft positionong sensors etc ( have already done oil change/spark plugs/ignition coils in last 2000km /maf sensor clean/air filter/throttle body clean/idle reset). What oil weight did you used? I would change the engine oil couple of times before replacing any parts. Then replace just the one solenoid.

It was on Mobil 1 prior cant remeber oil weight(was serviced by nissan dealership to 130,000km ), and was changed to 15w-40 at about 160,000km( after so called oil change specialist did an engine flush and was blowing white smoke for miles, they recommended and went to different weight due to engine wear) and has been on that since with regular oil changes. Yes, 15W-40 is to heavy for your engine, factory recommends 5W-30 or 5W-20. The orifices on the valves are very small and gets clogged very easy.

It's not a sensor, it's the Intake Valve Timing Control Solenoid Valve. Before replacing the valve solenoid, try using 5W-20 engine oil. 10W-40 may be to heavy.

I have 2011 quest. Same p0021 code in addition to rough idle and random misfire code. I tried replacing the intake valve solenoid on bank 2 but could only unscrew it but not take out. There's a fixed pipe that blocks the valve from coming all the way out of the engine. Do I have to take the cam cover off to get the valve out? And if so, any recommendation how to go about it?

Also, when I clear both codes, the van runs fine but throws the codes once it worms up and the car is stopped (idle). Under power, the engine smoothes out and runs fine. Any other diagnosis based on that other than solenoid valve?

The engine oil is by far the most common problem, but if the engine oil level and condition, and filter are OK. the you may have to replace the valve.

The "Fixed Pipe" you mention is the thermostat. You just need to remove two bolts to remove the thermostat. If is within your possibilities, change the thermostat at the same time.

I keep up with oil intervals and use 5w30. I appreciate your direction. Those two bolts will be very hard to get to but definitely should be less work than taking the whole cover off.
Would I have to drain the oil to do this? When I loosened up the solenoid valve some oil leaked out but wondering if it would be worse if the thermostat comes out since it's even lower on the engine....

You don't have to drain the engine oil, but if your remove the thermostat you should drain the coolant.

Never mind...I just realized it's a coolant thermostat. I guess I will need to drain the coolant...

2014 Nissian Frontier

Started with a P0021. So I changed the camshaft position sensors, cleared the code. Code came back within 50 or 60 miles. So we changed the VVT solenoids, cleared the code. It came back again within 50 or so miles. Changed the oil despite it having only just been done, cleared the code. Came back. We just had a mechanic under the hood, he changed the timing chain, tensioners, timing crank sprockets, and the timing chain back cover. Now it's back together. Drove 200 miles. P2004. He came back, cleared the code got the rudder working again.

Today the engine is pulling a P0021, P0123, P0223, P2004. Literally any advice would be helpful. We're stuck and we can't get rid of this car. We're 6k in the hole and we can't climb out.

I understand your frustration; it happened to me, but I was the mechanic responsible for all the work. I couldn't bill the customer until the repair was completed. In my situation, after multiple attempts at removing and reinstalling the timing chain, I eventually managed to get the timing correct, and that allowed me to resolve the issue. That was for the code P0021. The other codes are not related to the timing chain, so I recommend checking for loose connector or dirty throttle body.
