Code P0776 Toyota Description

Changing from 1st to 6th is performed by the Engine Control Module (ECM) turning shift solenoid valves SL1, SL2, SL3, SL4, and SL on and off. If an open or short circuit occurs in any of the shift solenoid valves, the ECM controls the remaining normal shift solenoid valves to allow the vehicle to be operated.
The ECM commands gear shifts by turning the shift solenoid valves on and off. According to the input shaft speed, intermediate (counter) shaft speed, and output shaft speed, the ECM detects the actual gear (1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th or 6th gear). When the gear commanded by the ECM and the actual gear are not the same, the ECM illuminates the MIL and stores the Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC).

  • if you want to fix the issue you may to get the valve body repaired (Faulty line pressure solenoid 'B' valve), or if there are metal shaving in the transmission it will have to be replaced.

  • Just got this code a few days ago after my wife, who drives our 04 Toyota Sienna LE(125 k+miles), went home so pissed saying the minivan woudn't accelerate when going on green light, and on bumper to bumper situations, the drive shift would lock & slip. Checked myself and confirmed that something was stuck when I proceeded to drive or would just speed up for no reason when going--get scared initially. Kept my cool though & looked up the code. Did the following: 1. replaced transmission fluid but will do a complete flush as it was so dirty; 2. ordered solenoid clutch assembly(SL2) and removed the valve body assembly which is a pain. Problem here is, I didn't realize that I needed 2 of these which are pricey if you get it from the stealership--or look it up on ebay or amazon and find a better deal. You need to know the exact locations of the 2 solenoids, lest replace the wrong one as one type looked similar, so beware. Waiting for the 2nd SL2. Key is patience. DIY is taking time to correctly do it. Your family's lives depend on what you do. Research before jumping into something. Spent hours researching and looking at the manual before the actual job. Case to case. After transmission replacement you may not replace the solenoids as during the trials I ran it after filling the transmission and the van run as if nothing happened. But being me, since I am opening it I went on to replace the parts since I just finishing the CV axles (front) and bearings anyway in preparation for a wheel alignment. Replaced also 2 crappy front tires. So there. I erased the code knowing that I knew what to do minus a visit from the despicable stealership!
