P1711 - TFT sensor out of range - what does that mean I need to fix/replace?

My 2004 Ford Taurus has the error code 1711.  Is the sensor internal or external?  Does it need to be replaced? Or is there a larger problem with the transmission?  How do I find out?

This is internal to the transmission. Either the temp sensor has failed, or the wiring to the temp sensor. You should not need a new transmission to resolve this problem.
