Mazda 626 4 cyclinder

The one shop said its bad fumes in the exhaust and it would start at $300 and go up and they couldn\'t promise they could fix it. The guy told me the fumes in my tank are harmful more so than what is coming out my exhuast. I don\'t know where to start. I thought about the O2 sense because it has never been changed.
