what needs to be done to get rid of the persistent engine with code P1443 on my 1996 Ford Escort wagon with 1.9L engine? It won\\'t pass NJ inspection if the light remains on.

The code is for the purge control solenoid or evap pressure sensor. Most of the time the purge control solenoid fails and this causes the code to appear. It's also possible there could be a wiring problem to the solenoid or a blockage to the solenoid causing the problem. The solenoid really has to be tested to be sure what the issue is.
