Only the check engine light is on and the code is P0500, have had it reset and was told the sensor is on top of transmission and would have to be dropped to replace. I want to know if this is accurate.

HI there

This model uses the wheel speed sensors, abs module and the instrument panel for the speed. It doesn't have a speed sensor mounted in the transmission. This is usually easiest to diagnose with a scan tool that can see the live data in the abs module to make sure the speed sensors are working. If they are and it's sending the signal to the computer then it's likely the issue is with the instrument panel.
