I've been having a problem with what appears to be false overheating. While going up a grade on a day that's relatively warm, my wife's car starts to heat up. If I let off the gas, it will return to normal temp within seconds. At a loss here. My plan was to change out the cheapest things first. Any help would be appreciated.

On the 1.5 liter you have a coolant temperature sensor and a coolant temperature switch. as for a cylinder head temperature there is none.Going up a hill that a lot a power required, the engine works harder, to keep the engine cool the cooling fan comes on. One area to watch is pressure, the radiator cap pressurize the cooling system this increase the boing point, any slight coolant system leaks can make the engine overheat especially under pressure, the  1.5 liter check the intake manifold bolts they easily back off. retorque  if required. check the radiator cap also replace if worn.
