NISSAN 2.0 vvt completely missing on eng.

2008 nissan 2.0 oil leaking below pasenger side motor mount found a connector plugs into a vvt solenoid pulled out a round tube about 2 inches long with rubber seals from what i can see it must have broken off vvt solenoid can eng run with out the vvt unit or will it cause damege to eng.
