the check engine light is on and all the gears are on on the dash. When selecting drive/reverse, the car knocks and jumps. When in motion, some gears slip. My left mounting was damaged and I have replaced it and checked the transmission oil.

All the gear indicators on this is the PRNDL (park, reverse, nuetral, drive, low) gear or what they call the gear selector, this is common where the gear selector switch is at fault, once this code is set the vehicle ECM put the transmission in emergency mode.there a common wire that get damage between the TCM (transmission control module) and the multifunction switch .your more than likely will need a harness repair.

Thanks Reynaldo. I am a novice when it comes to motor mechanics, so please excuse some of my silly questions. I get the gear selector being at fault but what is causing the violant knocking when I select drive or reverse? and what do you mean by I will need a harness repair?

That knock is when the gear is selected because you do not have electronic control it just slams in gear. By mean of the harness, the gear selector wire that runs to the TCM from the gear selector to its TCM that wire are the harness, that area tends to rub thru, now you would have a open circuit going from gear selector to TCM this is the reason for all the gear light to start flashing , it a open circuit
