OL mean open loop. the ECM does not see the 02 cycling. In the OBD 1  world the coolant temperature was used to control when the ECM would go into closed loop , what closed loop is , when the system is in closed loop the ECM uses the 02 sensor for the fuel strategy, when the system is in open loop the ECM does not look or responds to the 02 sensor for the fuel strategy. In the OBD II world the fuel system is used. with the coolant temperature sensor the coolant temperature may command a closed loop , but the fuel system if that is in open loop the ECM does not see the 02 sensor cycling at all.Here the solution, there should be a code that is set, BMW will set a code beside when the system say fuel system open you would automatically set a lean code. check to see if other codes are being set.
