the contact for the hot wire for fuel pump connection was burnt so i replaced it but once at operating temp car stalls in 1st-3rd gear then wont start

Contact on the fuel pump being burnt, the power comes from the inertia switch , even if the vehicle stalled out in first or third gear, the engine would start, a failing fuel pump or a lack of getting fuel would be one of the reason the engine would not start up again. the only way the contact for the hot wire to the fuel pump would show as burnt would be a lack of its ground wire, but that would show as no third functioning interior lamps , if the engine stalls cycle the key on Mercury you can hear the fuel , once it stalls and you do not hear the fuel pump you have a fuel pump issue
