If all it does is prevent the engine from going into the 4 cyl mode, can't I just let it go?

It can cause problem depending on what the cause is. When this code sets you can not go from 8 cylinder to 4 cylinder, The most common problem is the variable camshaft solenoid. If the solenoid is just the problem and is just ignored  Being a solenoid it can short its driver in the PCM. Then when the time for registration and a emission test is required , you will the solenoid and the PCM.
