If the sensor was bad why would check engine light go off for periods of time?

Sensor some are magnetic type where it produces its own voltage, When it comes to the ECM all it see is voltage, you may had a poor connection caused by water intrusion to moisture intrusion. When this type of situation happens this is considered a soft code or a intermittent condition
