what affect does code p0071 have to do with emissions

check engine light is on, code p0071 , faulty ambient tempertature sensor, why does this affect check engine light and cal. emmissions failure

The CK ENG LT program was designed to protect catalytic convertor, and the catalytic convertor protects the environment from harmful emission emitted into the atmosphere. The next purpose for it was to conserve fuel and make the vehicles more fuel efficient which it has , When the CK ENG LT comes on you use more fuel than what is required.   Unfortunately for P0071 the IAT (intake air temperature ) sensor is one assemble with the MAF (mass air flow). What air temperature does is advance timing and fuel injection timing, even though it is on a small scale and it would take a ECM just to tell you that there is problem. California was the first to establish the clean air program , The OBD II connection was a California demand, so there would be one connection , and the P0XXX which are the generic code that every vehicle  manufacture had to disclose was California demand. There is a big difference from what the air is now from back 25 years
