could an alternator case my car to downshift while normal driving

while driving at 60mph using cruise control my car down shifted and when i pulled over and shut the car down and tried to go again car would not shift.  if you let the car sit for about 10 minutes then things were good for about 13 miles the problem starts again

Yes this can cause the transmission to go into a limp mode. What happens is power to the transmission control module receives low input voltage.
