I had an O2 sensor code and changed the sensor with a Bosch sensor.
Now I have a P0053 code, the original sensor had some type of heat shield on it but the new one does not. Do I need to use that shield to possibly eliminate the code p0053?

HI there,

The heat shield is not the culprit here. You need to check the wiring to the sensor, the sensor fuses and if possible look at the heater circuit with a scan tool. If the sensor is shorted, or the wiring to it is shorted, or if the fuse is blown then you will get this code. The code is for the heater circuit. It's also possible the sensor is no good.If it was dropped at some point it can damage the heater wire inside and give you this code.
