I just bought an 06 VW Passat 2.0T for my daughter.  My ODBII scanner didn't detect and codes when I bought it.  a day or 2 later, I get:  P0171 P12A2 and P0507 codes

AutoZone's system suggested the fuel pump.

I don't notice any driveability concerns at the moment, maybe a little hesitation, but I attributed that to the Turbo.

Is the fuel pump the likely culprit or should I do some other diagnostics first?  The car wasn't what I'd call well taken care of and has sat for the last 2-4 months.

P0171 Fuel trim lean Bank 1

P12A2 Fuel rail pressure sensor

P0507 Idle air control system RPM higher than expected

Do other diagnostic first rather than jump to the fuel pressure pump, P12A2 is for the high pressure pump, which monitor the fuel pressure for the high pressure. If the rail pressure is lower than expected you would set a lean code condition, but there would be no need for the ECM to set a P0507.You more than likely have other problem that have gone unnoticed until now, Faulty high pressure pump, vacuum leak at the PCV valve or vacuum hoses
