The engine on my 2000 Saturn LS backfires and dies, I also have the engine code P0601. What could be the problem?

The P0601 is more likely for the Powertrain Control Module (PCM), but a bad PCM will not cause the engine to backfire, that problem is something else. Start with an engine tune-up.
