what is usally wrong when plugging in machine to get codes and it wont work

1999 nissan altima code machine wont work. tried 2.

In the 99 altima, in most cases you have to use the 17 pin connector located in the fuse box inside the car to pull the codes. You sometimes can use the obdII connector for some basic info and if it won't power up,  check for a blown fuse in the inside fuse box.
