Question

The 'D' light flashes occasionally and stops whenever the ignition is turned off. The transmission still woks fine though but with very heavy foot during downshifting the car jacks during the gear change.

Gear selector or what better known as transmission position sensor,

 On the transmission there is a gear position sensor , without this gear selector functioning properly you have exactly what you are experiencing
