Lean condition that pops the air box out is not only a lean fuel trim but a pre ignition , if this vehicle has a distributor its ignition timing will have to be checked, On some of these models it reluctor located in the distributor tends to get out of timing, which would cause exactly what you have. not only would the timing be off, the whole distributor would need to be replaced
