What causes the p0110 code on the 2003 Mercedes Benz E240 2.6L and the effect it has on the engine?

P0110 Intake air temperature sensor circuit malfunction

The IAT is integrated with the MAF, it take a ECM and the CK ENG LT  just to tell you there is a problem with the IAT sensor. The effect it has on the engine is not noticeable. as long as this is the only code and no MAP temperature code set.
