2005 Suzuki Vitara. Code P0456 or P0442. Replaced fuel cap. The car will operate great, with no check engine light for weeks. Then check engine light shows up. Reset computer. Everything will be fine for weeks, then for reasons I can't pinpoint the check engine light will show up again. A visual check of the system looks good. The intermittent nature of this problem is what drives me crazy. Other than trial and error, just start changing parts and hope I find the right one, what can I do?

Hi there,

You need to have the system smoke tested for leaks. This is the most effective way to find the problem. The fact that it can go weeks without the check engine light only means the sytem is taking that long to run a self test. It looks like its finding the problem each time it runs the test.
