P1744 ford escort zx2- 2000; torque converter clutch solenoid circuit performance

Question

Give the car gas and it hesitates then kicks into gear. Sometimes it rolls backwards at stop lights even with the car in drive. My car is an automatic. Was running fine for a couple of days, then started messing up. Then was normal, now it's really screwed up. Lots of hesitation. Won't go even when I press firmly on accelerator. Then it's like the car remembers, " oh yea, I need to go", and kicks rpms up and takes off. It's becoming more and more difficult to keep at one speed.

This means there is a problem with the torque converter. If there is an issue with the lock up you will have these symptoms. You need to start by checking the fluid, low or dirty fluid can cause this code to appear. If the fluid is fine then the torque converter solenoid will have to be tested.
