P0101 and P0172 on 2005 Volkswagen Jetta 2.5

Question

I'm getting a check engine light on my 2005 VW Jetta 2.5. I stopped by the local O'Reilly's Auto Parts store and they checked the codes. I'm getting two codes:

P0101 - Mass or Volume Air Flow Circuit Range/Performance Problem

and

P0172 - System too Rich (Bank 1)

Also, I don't know if its related, but I've also noticed an unusual high pitched whine from the engine area in the last few days.

Any possible diagnosis and solution or estimate of repair costs would be appreciated.

High pitch whine? Having a running rich condition on a VW would certainly rob the engine of power and performance, The high pitch whine noise should be investigated, If this whine noise was a partailly plugged exhuast that definetly would cause a rich fuel trim
