98 Mercury Mountaineer will not start. Check engine light has been on and there are two codes showing.... P0034 and P1309....How do I diagnose the problem....and how do I find the crankshaft? This is what I see...
Since it says circuit, that means the problem could lie in any part of the circuit - the sensor itself, the wiring, or the PCM. Don't just replace the CPS (camshaft position sensor) and think that will definitely fix it.
Symptoms
Symptoms can include: •Hard starting or no start •Rough running / misfiring •Loss of engine power
Causes
A code P0340 could mean one or more of the following has happened: • a wire or connector in the circuit could be grounded/shorted/broken •the camshaft position sensor may have failed •the PCM may have failed •there exists an open circuit •the crankshaft position sensor may have failed

Car computer system is not working?
P0340 Camshaft position sensor
P1309 Misfire detection monitor is not enabled
A no start condition will set a P0340. but this does not mean you have a failed camshaft position sensor. Even if you disconnected the cam position sensor the vehicle would still start, it will not run right but it would start.
Fuel pressure has to be check, On your engine along the fuel rail is a fuel pressure port test where a fuel pressure gauge can be attacthed to test the fuel pressure.
Ignition, if the vehicle has igntion there is no need to check the crankposition sensor. it is responsible for the ignition control module to produce spark. The engine needs to have igntiion.
Back to fuel needs , the Ford has a inertia switch look into the owner manual for it location. and see if the inertia switch has been set, Pressing the button down reset the inertia switch. (if it was ever set off)
Power, Ford recommends a wiggle test, when there is a no start, condition with key on egnine off wiggle the relay , Relay sometimes just does not turn on. and check for any open fuse.
