After replacing the sensor, I ran another scan and it cleared out the P0705. I didn't see the "P" in the indicator on the dash. Must the car be running before I see this light lit? I haven't filled the transmission case back up yet.

P0705 Transmission range sensor circuit malfunction

With the key on engine off you should see the gear selector indicator, have someone move the gear selector and inspect for proper movement with the gear selector shaft. The X3 is famous for its broken gear selector valve.

The indicator in the dash isn't showing up, but on the console it does. Could it be that an wire that controls this function be grounded or split? By the way it doesn't start anyways in any gear selected. Only for a second that I can see the "P" in the indicator and then it's gone.

You can see the indicator on the dash only for a second. something opened, the best to find this is to start with the fuse .There is 2 different location one is behind the glove box the other is in the trunk, check for any open fuses and replace. Find Fuse number F100 and F80, and might as well check the rest. When the light goes on the console that just a light bulb. For some reason the TCM does not see the gear selector this is more a open circuit.Be sure about the repair you made all contact at the TRS is secured nothing to doubt make sure  connection are secured, the problem is not with the TRS. What was history for the repair? and you did make sure the transmission shaft moved when moving the selector ,the shaft not broken.

In the trunk is a box that the main battery cable is running to and going back towards the front of the vehicle. it has 3 flat solid fuses that are connected in series. There's no fuse box that I could find back there. i know where is the one in the glove box and have checked all of them, but where is this f100 and f80 located at
