I'm getting the P1701 code on my 1996 Ford Explorer, what is the best way to fix it?

This code is a reverse engagement error conditions code. I would start by checking the fluid level, also make sure it's clean. The transmission range sensor see's an issue there. It could also be related to a mechanical issue in the transmission.
