obd II display screen shows an asterisk (*) and stops, what is wrong?

Plugged in my Brand new obd II POCKET SCAN CODE READER into my 2003 ford Taurus, but when obd starts it freezes on the asterisk (*) sign in display screen. Any idea why this may occur?

Vehicle: 2003, ford, Taurus, 3.0L v6
