I recently fixed the leaky cap in the drive line that kept soaking the sensor with transmission oil and fowuling the 02 sensor. I have not yet replaced the sensor. Will the replacement if the 02 sensor cure the heating element issues?

Yes it can , more than likely when a 02 sensor code a heater element this is usually the 02 sensor that can no longer maintain a temperature needed to stay in closed loop condition. The transmission leak can depending on the severety of the leak may have accelerated the 02 condition
