Nissan Maxima 1st gear is slipping

My friend is selling a 1997 NISSAN MAXIMA for $500.00 it is a stick shift and it needs an alternator and 1st gear is slipping could you please tell me if it could be the transmission or something else?

if all the gears are slipping then the clutch is bad, if you hear grinding of other noises then transmission might be bad.

you can try to replace the transmission and check the fluid for shaved metal or metal pieces, if none are found replace the fluid with a good fluid like Redline or Amsoil
