would smoking exhaust be a symptom of intake manifold gaskets need replacement? or what other problem will cause this

Smoke can be an indication of a problem with the oil rings on the pistons or a head gasket. Sometimes a rich running engine will give black smoke but with catalytic converters these days it is unusual.
