p1744-ford 01'escort zx2 trans doen't engage right away when put in gear an turning!!

Question

i have a 01 escort zx2 its an automatic an i think its a 2.0L!! I Bought it used a few months ago an the trans is acting funny!! The car starts an runs and drives great but when I start it an shift into gear it pauses before it actually engages into drive or reverse!! Also when u hang a turn unless ur going real slow when turning. Seems to me it down shifts as you slow to go into the turn then it hesitates going back into gear coming out of the turn!! the engine will actually rev up when accelerating before trans engages!! Seems to be only when turning when driven straight it dont have the prob much at all only when I shift into D or R after starting it up. It seems it's gets worse when its colder outside!!! any info on this would be greatly appreciated Thank You Very Much for Your Time!!
