Plug in the tester and it flashed 8888, Did I do it wrong?

Vehicle: 2005, Ford, F-150 4x4, 5.4 lit

Any of the code  that need to be rerieved should have a "P" such as P0XX or PXXXX, , Getting 8888 can be the scantool fault.
