defroster has to have air compressor on to work?

2009 Kia Rondo defroster works sluggish and air conditioner light comes on when running defroster. Is that normal?

This is normal. The air conditioner runs when the defrost is on to help remove the humidity from the air. All of the car makers have the a/c tied into the defrost. Some do it without you knowing, others turn the light on.
