Need help on my 1996 Chevrolet Cavalier 2.4L code P0171 is coming out.

Question

I recenty purchases a 1996 cavalier 2.4 ls and the code P0171 comes out. When I turn it on, on the first try it idles and then turns off. On the second try it starts idling at a higher rpm and goes down to a regular rpm ans stays on. I'm not sure where to start. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

P0171 Fuel trim lean Bank 1

You may have 2 problem a IAC (idle air control) and a lean fuel trim situation. When you first start the engine the RPM should be high then go to a lower idle. Since it does not this would be a idle air control problem.Perform a MAF (mass airflow ) cleaning and a throtttle body cleaning. See if that helps any.
