How can I get check engine codes?

I need to know the procedure for displaying any Check Engine codes on the vehicle odometer display without using a diagnostic computer. For example, turning the key to "on" position a certain number of times, etc.

Code gathering and displayed on the instrument panel Ford does not have that option Chrysler and certain Cadillac have that option.
