Where is the evaporative emission control system malfunction on a 2000 Chevrolet Cavalier? I got the P0440 code.

HI there,

The evap system prevents fuel vapors from escaping. This code is not specific to any single part on the car or of the system. Basically it means there is a problem or a leak, but the computer isn't sure where it is. This could be the result of a faulty gas cap, a bad charcoal canister or a purge control valve. Usually to try and repair you start with a new gas cap then if that doesn't resolve it, doing a smoke test would be required.
