2003 Chevrolet Monte Carlo Catalytic Converters

Question

On my 2003 Chevrolet Monte Carlo, is it possible to replace OEM catalytic converter with one that does not meet OEM specs? even though the part is advertised to do so?

if you go to a muffle shop they know what aftermarket cat they can use, if you buy a small one it might not work and you wont pass smog.

The aftermarket cats only last 2 or 3 years, vs orginal cats that last 10 years or so
