The mechanic wants to change out both injection valves for $900 and says that this condition could take out the Catalytic Converter (which I assume to be a very expensive repair). I want to know if this p0410 is a threat to the Catalytic Converter. As well as, is there anyway for me to know that these valves need replacing or can they be cleaned out?

Vehicle: 2001 , Cadillac, STS, 32 valve Northstar

P0410 Secondary air injection system malfunction

This code condition is where the secondary air injection fails to turn on.The secondary air pump is used on the vehicle to lower tail pipe emission during start up. There is no threat to the catalytic convertor .It just not effective at start up.G.M has put out a TSB on a known condition TSB # 02-06-04-024H. SES Lamp on/DTC P0410 Air pump inop.which will require the replacement of the secondary air pump inlet hose assembly or filter kit.This is due to water being ingested at the secondary air injection air pump inlet hose, causing the pump to short out or sieze up.Yes you can clean out the air injection valves.Which is recommended
