how do you fix code p1811-eng maximum adapt and long shift on a 2004 buick rendezvouis

went to get inspected and service engine soon light on.. this code popped up p1811-eng maximum adapt and long shift....is this a simple fix and can I do it myself

Start by checking/replacing the transmission fluid if it has not been serviced in the last 30k miles, if you still have the problem a you should take it to a  transmission specialist 

if there is hard shifting and there is metal in the transmission, the transmission might be bad.
