My engine occasionally shuts down when driving. This code keeps coming up. What could be the cause?

P1171 Fuel system lean during acceleration

This is a fuel pump issue where the fuel pressure is insufficient for the load or acceleration. It is also recommended that the fuel tank be check for water and have the fuel filter repalced. Eventually the fuel pump will stop functioning.
