Changed CMP sensor, and cam solenoid/actuator. Was going to change CKP sensor but GM dealership said not to bother, that it was likely timing chain. Went to another GM dealership for diagnosis. They said crankshaft endplay was .0044 and I need a new motor. I checked internet and some say tolerance is between .0044 and .0153, which means the endplay must be okay. Truck's been running 10,000 miles with P0017 going on either immediately at start-up or 300 miles later. Runs perfect, no rough idle, no hard start-ups or stalling. Only P0017 lights - no other codes. Anyone have a similar experience? Do I have the tolerance range right? Any suggestions as to what the problem might be?

edited: "look at your cam actuator solenoid on the front passenger side of the head(has two prong plug and one bolt). You will need to move the PS pump by removing the 3 bolts which can easily be accessed through the holes in the belt pulley. Slide out the acuator and see if the top 3 screens are clean and intact. If dirty use some carb cleaner but be carefull not too break the screens and remove the o-ring so the cleaner dont eat it up. My acuator has a broken screen in which part of it jammed into the solenoid and the other half is MIA in the engine. This is a top fix for the p0017 dtc. just under 100 bucks at dealer because they are the only ones who have it! Just passing on some experieince I gained from going the other way first on replacing cam/crank sensor first. It was the actuator all the time. I hope this helps all who have the p0017 codes. There is also another post on trailvoy that has some pics on removal of the acuator."

Did you use factory parts when replacing both parts?

has the crank shaft bolt been torqued to spec? 110 lb. ft.

if you so, next step says check valve timing, if its off the I guess the timing chain, tensionor and guides may need to be replaced assuming there is not engine damge, which is a little over 9.5 hours of labor.

when the timing goes off its possible the valves might hit the piston. but if you are right on the edge of the limit that might set the engine light on.

here is the diagnostic procedures from the service manual
