when the engine failure light comes on my car dies but will run again in a few minutes. check engine light is always on. any ideas what it could be?

When the check engine light is on it means there is a code stored in the system. One of the monitored systems. There are over 500 reasons for the light to come on. You have to have the codes read to determine the cause of the problem.
