Mazda Protege does not show any DTC's but the transmission is not engaging correctly and idle is erratic.

Question

Mazda 1995 Protege shows no codes but Transmission does not engage when placed in reverse unless engine speed is greatly accelerated. Idle speed is erratic while in drive (first gear); this condition started after the battery went completely dead and was replaced. Can not find problem.
