What is the potential risks of driving the vehicle with this problem?

I'm not a sure, but the service manual say there may be carbon build up on the sensor so is it not reading correctly 

you have remove the sensor and try to clean it with brake clean and a brush (see picture) 

it does not show a good picture of the location but it looks like this.
