I'm not understanding the issue you have,

The small tab by the shifter is how you can put the car in neutral, if the car is not going into a gear. the shifter may also be adjusted (see picture below)

if for some reason both those things dont fix the problem the shifter assembly may be replaced. (I've seen this happen after someone spilled coffee on the shifter.)
