I have a Nissan Altima 2002. the check engine light came on and the code was P0420. My car is drving fine, but is now guzzling too much gas. Is this because of the code?

Vehicle: 2002 Nissan Altima 2.5SL 4 cyl

the catalytic converter might be bad along with the oxygen sensors. if there is no other issues with the car. the ECM may also need to be reprogrammed if it is not on the latest update
