Will changing transmission fluid help eliminate transmission slippage?\

My 1998 chevy Lumina has a check engine soon light....when checked, it gave me a 1870 code...I see that it is excessive transmission slippage...I note that the fluid is full but looks dark..The fluid has never been changed...Do you think that changing the fluid will help this problem?

Vehicle: 1998 Chevrolet Lumina 8 cyl

its possible, that replacing it will help. Also the fluid is suppose to be changed every 30,000 miles or so.
